Why Use a Planning Consultant?

Planning consultants provide expertise in designing and carrying out regional and community planning programs and development projects.

Public and private planning groups will benefit from obtaining professional planning services in the following situations:

  • You require specific skills which your staff lacks.
  • You need additional advice on specific problems.
  • You have the need for objectivity, experience and the credentials of a third party.
  • Your staff does not have time to complete a project by a specific date.

The key qualifications which a planning consultant brings to your problems are:
Experience, Technical Expertise, New Ideas, Objectivity, Knowledge of Current Planning Laws and Practice, Presentation Skills and Graphic Abilities, GIS-Computer Skills, Public Participation Skills.

Michigan law does not require competitive price selection for professional services (including planning, engineering, or architecture) regardless of the budget amount.

Many Michigan communities work with the same planning consulting firm for many years because of the benefits and efficiencies of a firm's local planning knowledge, avoidance of costly selection processes and the predictability of service quality. Loyalty to a planning firm, which consistently provides quality service, may best serve your needs and meet your objectives.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Most professional planners practicing in Michigan are certified and/or registered. The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is the national professional institute within the American Planning Association (APA). AICP's central mission is the professional development and certification of its members as a means to the ongoing improvement of the practice of planning. AICP membership includes about 10,000 of the 30,000 APA members. In the State of Michigan, if planners meet State requirements they can use the title "Professional Community Planner" (PCP). The State Act does not prescribe what activities are to be conducted by a registered planner.

We hope these recommendations help. Please contact any members of the Planners in Private Practice group for more information about selecting a planning consultant.
