This not to exceed two-year Student Assistant Position allows for a maximum of 129 hours/month and can be flexible and/or reduced throughout the school year. This position, housed in the Statewide Planning Section (SPS) of the Bureau of Transportation Planning, is comprised of a team of 14 professional transportation planning staff that work on a wide variety of programs and projects to help advance MDOT’s mission of “Serving and connecting people, communities, and the economy through transportation.” SPS works closely with Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Regional Planning Agencies partners on statewide and metropolitan planning processes and programs. SPS also administers the Rural Transportation Planning Program, Rural Task Force Program, Small Urban Program, Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, and Byways Program.
This opportunity would allow the student to gain vast knowledge on a variety of programs as well as create and build relationships with transportation planning and engineering partners at the state, regional, and local levels throughout the entire State of Michigan. The student must be able to research, and respond to reports, memos, letters, and other materials, travel independently by commercial transportation or automobile to attend meetings or other work-related activities, ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time using a computer and must be able to work independently if choosing to work remotely.

Williams & Works is seeking an intern to assist our award-winning planning group. The ideal candidate will have graduated (or be on track to graduate) with a bachelor’s degree or higher in urban or regional planning or a related field, with a strong interest in community master planning, zoning, economic development, transportation and non-motorized planning, GIS, and/or demographic research and analysis.
This is an in-office position that requires the ability to foster and maintain strong working relationships with other professionals and clients and the ability to participate in multi- faceted planning and zoning assignments.
Projects include work on master plans, zoning ordinances, parks and recreation plans, development reviews, special projects, and similar tasks. This internship offers abundant opportunities to participate in a variety of challenging and exciting planning tasks with our public and private sector clients.
It is anticipated that this will be a temporary position from May through August 2025, although opportunities to extend the position may be explored, as needed. A transition to full-time employment is also possible, but not guaranteed.
