Williams & Works seeks a Community Planning intern to work with our growing Planning and Design Team. The applicant should be enrolled in a graduate-level urban planning, public policy, geography, or similar field or have recently graduated from such a program. The selected individual will participate in active community master planning, parks & recreation planning, nonmotorized planning, subarea planning, private development, and zoning projects. Interns will also participate in community engagement strategies with other team members in client communities and provide support for municipal planning projects involving site plan reviews, community development, GIS applications, and data research and analysis reporting. This internship is an in-office position that requires the ability to foster and maintain strong working relationships with other professionals and clients and the ability to participate in multi-faceted planning, development, and zoning assignments.
This is a part-time, paid internship at our downtown Grand Rapids office. The position consists of 24 hours of work per week; however, more hours may be available up to 40 hours a week depending on the applicant’s qualifications and project needs. We offer a fun and collaborative work environment and abundant opportunities to participate in a variety of challenging planning tasks with our public and private sector clients.

Duties will include working closely with the technical assistance team to contribute to projects aimed at promoting economic vitality across the state of Michigan, including but not limited to the development and implementation of supplemental best practices including resiliency and child care, supporting community storytelling efforts and assisting with priority site promotion. Responsibilities will span various aspects of project management, research, and collaboration, allowing the student to gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of economic development. Canton Township is seeking a Planning Services Intern to assist with tasks related to planning, zoning, GIS, tree program assistance, forestry, landscape architecture, and similar tasks assigned by the Township. The intern may respond to telephone and email inquiries, assist in communicating and interpreting municipal regulations, review site plans and building plans, create and edit application forms and internal procedure forms, use GIS software to create new maps, edit existing maps, and assist with database management. The intern will perform routine office procedures and operate office machinery and municipal equipment, such as computers, printers, and scanners.
This “at-will”, variable-hour position has hours that will fluctuate and are limited to an average of less than 29 hours per week. Minimum age of 18. Some college courses in planning, zoning, GIS, forestry, arboriculture, landscape architecture, or environmental fields of study required. Must possess a current, valid Michigan Driver’s License with a driving record that does not create liability concerns. Good working knowledge of general planning and zoning concepts and/or GIS is required. Ability to communicate effectively and establish good working relationships with the public and other employees. Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
