Community Development Specialist

Under the general guidance of the Deputy Director of Economic and Community Development, the Community Development Specialist designs and implements physical and socioeconomic studies and plans for the City of Monroe. This role also proposes new areas for planning and makes authoritative recommendations on economic, social, and physical considerations affecting orderly land uses and development. Serves as project leader/coordinator for conducting research and preparing study designs and narrative reports in recognition of data findings. Conducts surveys of the general public, local authorities, business representatives, preservation community, planning community, and special interest groups, compiling data in a usable format and fashion. Compiles data and presents findings at appropriate venues. Serves as a staff liaison to specific city boards, commissions, and committees, and may assume direct responsibility for various project activities with such groups. Coordinates, attends, and participates in assigned boards, commissions, and committee meetings. This role coordinates internships with colleges, including preparing job descriptions, candidate evaluations, and recommendations for hiring.

A Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent in public administration, urban planning, or a related field. Two to five years of experience in planning, economic development, and the related municipal environment is preferred. Continuing education credits applicable to American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification, Citizen Planner Program, or Master Citizen Planner credential preferred.

Salary range: $26.40 - $39.62 per hour DOQ, plus excellent benefits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

By the closing date of this announcement, and applicant must:

• Check and processes all zoning amendments, waiver, and site plan petitions 
• Prepare maps and reports

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Planner position supports new and ongoing business in southeastern Michigan. The ideal candidate will be able to work a hybrid schedule in the Northville office.
