Planning Advocate Award

Dr. Deyanira Nevarez Martinez
Michigan State University/City of Lansing

As the first planner by training and the first Michigan State University professor to be elected to serve Ward 2 on the Lansing City Council, Deyanira has embedded professional planning expertise directly into local governance, creating a model for how planners can lead in elected office while strengthening professional planning practice. In her roles on the City Council Committee on Development and Planning, the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, and ex-officio member of the planning commission, she champions planners and planning processes.

One letter of supported noted, "Her impact is especially evident in her approach to complex land use and housing issues." Jurors said, "Her work demonstrates the important role planning can play in shaping more inclusive and resilient communities."

Congratulations Dr. Navarez Martinez!
